Indiana’s blood supply is dwindling after two days of donor cancellations due to inclement weather. Since Tuesday, Indiana Blood Center has seen a drop in nearly 1,000 donations forecasted through today as cancellations continue.
Patient need for blood has been down since Tuesday due to fewer procedures at hospitals. Hospital activity is expected to increase today and blood banks are looking to build their supply. Hospitals are asking about blood inventory in determining whether to cancel surgeries. As of 9 this morning, Indiana Blood Center was unable to fill requests for O-negative blood, the universal blood type.
Hoosiers are urged to schedule donation appointments through the weekend. To make an appointment at either donor centers or mobiles, visit DonorPoint.org and click “Find a Drive” or call 1-800-632-4722.
