Three battery suspects remain jailed

TERRE HAUTE — Three people remain in jail awaiting trial dates in relation to a Feb. 17 battery that sent a Terre Haute man to an Indianapolis hospital.

Jesse Norton, 20, of Marshall, Ill., and David Rayhel Jr., 21, of Terre Haute, both appeared Friday in Vigo Superior Court 3 where they were formally charged with aggravated battery, a class-B felony; battery by means of a deadly weapon, a class-C felony; criminal recklessness with a vehicle, a class-D felony;and misdemeanor battery resulting in bodily injury.

Britanie N. Parrish, 20, of Terre Haute, appeared Thursday in Terre Haute City Court on a misdemeanor charge of battery resulting in bodily injury.

The three were arrested after the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department responded to a call about 3:15 a.m. Sunday in northern Vigo County. Upon arrival, police found two victims of the alleged battery lying beside the roadway. A 26-year-old man had received serious injuries and was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital. He has since been released from Methodist Hospital. Also, a 23-year-old woman was treated at a local hospital for her injuries.

Police were told that the alleged victims and suspects had been at a party on Rio Grande Road in northern Vigo County when the two victims left the party, but were pursued in a vehicle by the three suspects. The victim’s vehicle was allegedly forced off the road, and the alleged battery followed.

The three suspects were located by police later Sunday near 13th and Poplar streets. They were taken to the Vigo County jail. Bail for both Norton and Rayhel has been set at $50,000 with no 10 percent allowed. Bail for Parrish is set at $5,000 cash only.

All three suspects have been appointed public defenders. Norton and Rayhel return to court Monday for setting of trial dates. Parrish returns to city court on Thursday for a hearing.
