Encouraging student musical participation is goal of new fund

TERRE HAUTE — Kathleen Culver is not a musician, but she loves music.

She’s also aware of how expensive music lessons and instrument rental can be for young people and families who might lack the resources.

As a result, Culver has established a fund through the Vigo County Education Foundation to encourage young people to participate in instrumental or singing programs at their schools.

The For the Love of Music Fund would provide financial support to fifth- or sixth-grade students who otherwise would not have the money to pursue their interests in music, whether band, choir or orchestra.

“If they are discouraged at that age, I’m afraid they won’t pursue it,” she said.

She provided $500 in seed money and a subsequent donation. Now, she is asking for the public’s help. “I want to encourage others to join me in supporting the For the Love of Music Fund so that more students will be able to pursue their interests in music regardless of their family’s financial situation,” she said.

Culver’s concern and enthusiasm is an example of how one person can make a difference to improve local education, said Jenny Thomas, Education Foundation executive director.

“I think it’s outstanding that a member of our community is such an ardent supporter of the arts and so committed to providing music assistance to students throughout our school corporation,” Thomas said. “The foundation is grateful to her for coming to us with such a wonderful idea to help young students.”

Money from the new fund could cover the costs of renting a musical instrument, taking instrumental or voice lessons or providing funds to buy a shirt or pants that are needed to be part of an elementary choir or band.

Thomas said a committee of music teachers and an administrator will determine how the money is distributed, and she expects to begin that process for the 2010-11 school year. The foundation is soliciting donations and the goal is for the fund to be sustainable. “We won’t award it all at once,” Thomas said.

The fund is new, and the foundation will need to assess the need and the amount of money that is donated.

Tax-deductible donations to the For the Love of Music Fund can be made to the Vigo County Education Foundation by mailing contributions to Jenny Thomas, executive director, 686 Wabash Ave., P.O. Box 3703, Terre Haute, IN 47803. Anyone having questions about the For the Love of Music Fund can contact Thomas at (812) 462-4077.
