The Vigo County YMCA will open its doors at 5:30 a.m. Monday after it surpassed its membership goal and nearly reached its fundraising goal, said Deborah Plummer, chief executive officer.
The YMCA has 357 members, topping its goal of 320 members, and has raised $98,500 of a $100,000 initial corporate funding goal.
“It is a special day for our organization and a day that we want to just pause and say thank you to an amazing community,” Plummer said Friday during an announcement of the facility’s opening next week.
“People who have already signed up just need to come in and we will give them their membership card and get them started,” Plummer said.
“We are just so excited to be able to strengthen the community in new ways, to focus on youth development and healthy living and social responsibility for this community.”
The YMCA’s revamped facility underwent inspections from the city of Terre Haute Friday, Plummer said, and was approved for opening.
The Y will be open 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday.
Summer hours are 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday; and closed Sundays. After the summer, the Y is going to be open Sundays and longer on Saturdays.
The Vigo County YMCA is a second branch of the Clay County YMCA.

“The timing is interesting [for the opening] because it is not typical for people to want to go and join a fitness facility during the summer, but it is a great time to join the YMCA as there are great programs for kids and are wonderful things for families to do together, so it is a great way to fill that time productively,” Plummer said.
Plummer said staff and volunteers will be the key to ensuring the long-term success of the facility. “It will be that welcoming smile when you walk in the door, the support when you have a question or need something,” Plummer said. “What will sustain our membership will be the interactions and relationships we are able to build through the YMCA.”
Plummer said the YMCA has worked with the Indiana Attorney General’s office to offer memberships to 80 people who had filed suit against the former Riverbank Family & Fitness Center, which closed in 2010.
“There were 23 [people] who were full-pay memberships, who got less than a month’s worth for their memberships. We have reached out through the Attorney General to offer a free year-long membership for those individuals, so they have received a letter in the mail,” Plummer said.
“For those that were paying month by month or had paid for program fees, we will be able to waive their join fees, even if they join up until the end of this year and also give them three free passes so they come and try us out and again see that we are different and things are different than they were before,” Plummer said.
Plummer said if a person was not involved in a lawsuit, but can show proof of payment to Riverbank, the YMCA join fee will be waived. “We understand that some people will be less trusting because of the way this facility closed before, but we want them to get to know us and know that we are different.”
“It is the YMCA of Clay County, and now we have two great branches and we can’t wait to engage them in our programs,” Plummer said.
