Schools ready to embrace Random Acts of Kindness Week all year

TERRE HAUTE — A week dedicated to kindness ends today, but organizers hope to keep the spirit alive.

National Random Act of Kindness Week culminates today in America, with participants encouraged to perform a simple gesture to help others without an expectation of it being returned.

Robin Heng, co-founder of SPPRAK — Special People Performing Random Acts of Kindness — said her group is working to partner with the Vigo County School Corp. to continue that idea throughout the year.

“We’re encouraging people,” she said, explaining the acts of kindness can be as simple as leaving a note of appreciation for someone, or helping with an assignment.

With New Year’s resolutions come and gone, she said ideas for family activities include creating a list of 10 acts of kindness to perform this year, or perhaps 30 in a month.

The group hopes to have posters inside the school this semester, and participants can follow along on the website spprak.blogspot.com, Facebook or Twitter.

Random Acts of Kindness Day is an unofficial holiday celebrated around the world, she said. Since the group’ founding, participants have contributed to projects ranging from tornado relief to graffiti removal.

Dan Tanoos, superintendent of the Vigo County School Corp., said the program will allow students and faculty to re-focus on the positive accomplishments going in schools.

“I think the biggest reason to do this is that we often lose track, in such a busy world that we live, of all the good things that people do for one another,” he said. “And also, we need to reverse this trend about so much negativity, about kids and violence in schools, and put the focus on all the good things that are taking place.”

His teams are in place to help with the program, and he said it will help display the servants’ hearts within the corporation’s students and staff.
