U.S. Marshals nab wanted man

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute man was arrested late Thursday morning after being on the run from police for more than a week.

The U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force, acting on a tip, nabbed Lee Edward Bemis, 25, after he was spotted as the passenger in a van being driven by a woman. He was arrested without incident on Indiana 63 near Margaret Avenue about 11:35 a.m. and taken to the Vigo County Jail.

The woman was not arrested and is not facing any charges, according to a news release issued Thursday by the Indiana State Police.

Bemis had been sought since he failed to appear in court Jan. 2 to face allegations stemming from an arrest that took place in late December. At that time, Bemis was accused of driving a stolen vehicle from Vermillion County when he failed to stop for an Indiana State Police trooper and drove his vehicle through a fence near First Street and Eighth Avenue. He then allegedly fled on foot in the direction of the Wabash River before later being later found and arrested with a woman police identified as a “female accomplice.”

Bemis was taken to the Vigo County Jail where he is facing allegations of receiving stolen property, a D-felony, resisting law enforcement, an A-misdemeanor, and a warrant from the Indiana Department of Corrections, according to the news release.
