Absentee voting open through Monday in Vigo

TERRE HAUTE — The chance for absentee voting remains open today and Monday for those who choose to take it.

Vigo County Clerk Pat Mansard said absentee voting opportunities remain available through Monday inside the Vigo County Courthouse on the first floor. The election office will be open for business from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today, and 8 a.m. to noon Monday. The 2012 primary election will occur Tuesday.

Voters must present state-issued identification to participate, she said.

“We’ve done everything we can here to encourage people to vote,” Mansard said Friday afternoon.

As of Thursday evening, 1,339 Vigo County residents had voted absentee, she said. Of that number, 454 were sent in by mail, 74 were consigned, and 811 were walk-ins at the courthouse. The county’s registered voter pool contains 74,040 this election, she said.

“I think this is pretty normal for a primary,” she said of the turnout. “You don’t have as many people voting in a primary as a general election.”

Still, the fact that 2012 includes a presidential race should bolster participation, if only in the November general election, she said.

People need to inform themselves about the topics and candidates, get involved, Mansard said.

“There’s a very real connection between who gets elected and who impacts your life,” she said.
