Steamy air temperatures burst record after record as the Drought of 2012 continues to plow through July.
Meteorologist Earl Breon of the National Weather Service confirmed Wednesday evening that yet another record high temperature was ushered into the books. With the 105-degree mark recorded at the Terre Haute International Airport at 5 p.m., the old record of 102 set in 1934 was left in the dust.
“Counting today, we’ve actually set eight records for this month,” he said of July.
Altogether, 25 record highs have been set or tied this year since March 1, he said.
On 11 days this month, the temperature has hit, or exceeded 100 degrees, according to a report generated by the NWS. The coldest daytime high temperature was July 20 at 86 degrees. Only one day of the month was deemed “cloudy” with two marked as “partly cloudy.”
Meanwhile, precipitation has been scarcer than scarce. According to the reports, the total precipitation accumulated in June was 0.23 inches, with only 0.45 inches in July. Normal years would bring 4.44 and 3.44 inches of rain, respectively, for those two months.
Today brings the best chance for rain the area’s seen in a while, Breon said. With a 60-percent chance for thunderstorms today, temperatures are expected to be in the upper 90s, dropping to the middle 90s Friday. But Friday and Saturday are both expected to be clear of precipitation, with a 30-percent chance for rain Sunday, he said, describing that day’s temperatures as relatively cool, in the upper 80s.
