Police to expand Citizens Academy program to 10 weeks

TERRE HAUTE — Ever wondered what it’s like to be a police officer?

Why some people get arrested, and how crimes are solved?

The Terre Haute Police Department is now accepting applications for its 10-week Citizens Academy program to inform the public and build community relations.

Application deadline is Aug. 27 and applications can be picked up at the information desk at THPD. The program is free, and only 20 adults age 18 or older will be accepted, following a background check.

“We do a Junior Academy for kids,” Chief John Plasse said, “and they really enjoy it. But we feel this is a way to give back to the adults and to the parents.”

Plasse said he got the idea for the academy when visiting other police departments to look at their buildings during the planning stages for the new THPD headquarters to be constructed in the future. The first Citizens Academy was conducted in the spring, but was only eight weeks long.

“It was kind of eye-opening for a lot of them,” Plasse said of the first academy.

The second academy has been expanded, based on feedback from participants and trainers, who want to include more areas. A session on Central Dispatch will be included, at the request of past citizens.

The classes will take place Wednesday evenings for about two hours each session. Topics include emergency vehicle driving, detective duties, crime scene processing and police procedures. Opportunities to be tased will also be offered to willing participants.

All of the training will be conducted by THPD instructors. None of the participants will be given police powers because of their training, Plasse noted.

But he said he hopes the participants will take their new knowledge back to their neighborhoods and share a better understanding of what police do for the community, and how they do it.
