Parke official files for state seat

County commissioner to run for District 42 position

TERRE HAUTE — Parke County Commissioner Jim Meece has filed as Republican candidate for the District 42 seat in the Indiana House of Representatives.

It is a seat that will be open because the incumbent, Rep. F. Dale Grubb, D-Roachdale,  is not seeking re-election in a district that has been redrawn.

Meece, 62, is in his third elected term as a county commissioner. He was most recently elected to that position in 2010. He is also a teacher, for the past 27 years, at Turkey Run Junior-Senior High School, teaching government, economics and U.S. history.

“I really want to try to bring some respect and cooperation into the statehouse. We really need some of that right now,” Meece said.

Meece said he is in support of reforming schools. “I think there are some good common sense reforms that are needed. I don’t believe teachers are the problem and can help be part of the solution. I think parents need to be more involved and I think there is a case to be made to find some motivation for them to be more involved [in their children’s] education,” he said.

Meece said he does not “support changing local government to where we have one single executive. I think that would be going back to the days where people appoint their friends ... and would get back to a good-ole boy thing, and I don’t want to see us go there.”

He also thinks non-policy offices such as a county auditor, treasurer and clerk should not be limited on terms. “Those people work hard to learn the skills of the office and it takes a couple of years to do that, and once they get proficient, have to move on to something else and I think that is a waste of talent and education,” he said. By state law, county offices can be held by one person for a maximum of two four-year terms in a row.

Meece said a shift in state revenues is also needed to help local governments, especially with paying to repair roads. He noted that Parke County’s highway funding has been cut from $1.2 million to about $600,000.

Meece and his wife, Gayle, have two grown children and four grandchildren.

Parke County resident Bill Webster has also filed for the District 42 seat. Webster is a heavy equipment mechanic and Rosedale Fire Department firefighter and former chief. Webster previously announced his candidacy in September.

Mark C. Spelbring, the Purdue University Extension Service Director in Rockville, has filed to run in the District 42 Democratic primary.
