Trio faces charges in theft from mine site

TERRE HAUTE — Three Terre Haute residents remained in custody on drug-related allegations after what Clay County officials believe was an attempt to steal scrap metal.

According to a Clay County Sheriff’s Department news release, the three were arrested when deputies investigated a theft at the former AMAX Coal Mine on Lower Bloomington Road near the Vigo County line Friday. An off-duty Indiana Conservation Officer told dispatchers he saw three people stealing scrap metal.

Deputies stopped a pick-up truck on mine property and found scrap metal in the bed. Deputies said they also found methamphetamine, marijuana and paraphernalia in the truck.

Kevin E. Woodsmall, 42, was arrested on suspicion of theft, receiving stolen property, a class-D felony; maintaining a common nuisance, a class-D felony; and criminal trespass, a class-A misdemeanor.

Kevin J. French, 38, was arrested on suspicion of theft, receiving stolen property, a class-D felony; criminal trespass, a class-A misdemeanor; visiting a common nuisance, a class-B misdemeanor; and possession of methamphetamine, a class-D felony.

Lisa A. Patterson, 39, was arrested on suspicion of theft, receiving stolen property, a class-D felony; criminal trespass, a class-A misdemeanor; visiting a common nuisance, a class-B misdemeanor; possession of marijuana, a class-A misdemeanor; and possession of paraphernalia, a class-A misdemeanor.

All three remained in the Clay County Jail on Friday afternoon with bail for each set at $7,000, no 10 percent allowed.
