Businessman arrested, faces 8 criminal charges

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute businessman has been arrested on eight criminal counts for allegedly ordering people to steal electronics and other items that he would then resell.

Darrell E. Shouse, 52, faces two counts of corrupt business influence, a class-C felony, along with six counts of attempted receiving stolen property, a class-D felony. He was arrested Monday afternoon, with bail set at $35,000 no 10 percent allowed.

Shouse appeared in Vigo Superior Court 6 on Tuesday afternoon where the criminal charges were read to him. Another hearing is set for 10 a.m. Friday in Superior Court 3.

Detective Charles Burris of the Terre Haute Police Department told the Tribune-Star that police began investigating Shouse in June and made some controlled deliveries to Shouse of property that was represented to be stolen.

When police served search warrants on Shouse’s house in the 800 block of Oak Street and at his detailing business in the 900 block of College Avenue, Burris said, they located electronics, tools, cash, a handgun and documents believed to be connected to what they allege are Shouse’s corrupt business dealings.

A probable cause affidavit filed in Vigo Superior Court 3 states that a confidential informant was used to deliver allegedly stolen items to Shouse, who then paid the informant for the items. Investigators purchased electronics items from local retailers, getting items allegedly requested by Shouse, such as flatscreen televisions and headphones. The informant then delivered the items to Shouse, who paid the informant a small amount for the items. Police say they monitored those transactions at a distance, and recorded on an audio/video device worn by the informant.

Burris said investigators believe the allegedly illegal enterprise has been going on for several months. Transactions monitored by police were recorded on six dates from June 12 to July 3.
