Alan Dove charged in alleged beating

TERRE HAUTE — A West Terre Haute man accused of allegedly battering his wife’s lover with a flashlight will find out his trial date next week.

Alan W. Dove, 33, was charged Wednesday in Vigo Superior Court 6 with burglary resulting in bodily injury, aggravated battery and domestic battery.

Dove was booked into the Vigo County jail on a preliminary charge of attempted murder, but Prosecutor Terry Modesitt said that after reviewing the facts of the case, he chose to file the class-A felony burglary resulting in bodily injury.

The victim sustained severe head trauma, including skull and facial fractures and bleeding on the brain, and was hospitalized in Indianapolis. A Methodist Hospital spokesman said the victim was released from the hospital on Wednesday.

The aggravated battery charge is a class-B felony, while domestic battery is a class-A misdemeanor.

The incident occurred early Saturday morning in West Terre Haute. Dispatchers received a report of an injured man on West Rigy Street. Police initially did not have a suspect, but after talking to neighbors in the area, police developed Dove as a suspect. He was found at his home at about 7 p.m. Saturday, and the alleged weapon – a heavy-duty flashlight – was recovered from inside Dove’s semi.

In Dove’s statement to police, he said he came home early, went to the victim’s house and found his wife and the victim together at that house. Dove said he believed the victim was unconscious after the second blow from the flashlight, but he continued to strike him with the flashlight until it fell from his hand, and then he continued to hit the victim with his fist. Dove said he also struck his wife in the face with his hand when she tried to stop the attack.

Dove will return to court Wednesday for the setting of trial dates.
