Fundraiser for police K9s planned

TERRE HAUTE — Demonstrations by some “top dogs” in law enforcement will highlight a weekend fundraiser for the Terre Haute Police Department’s K-9 unit.

“Hot Dogs for the Top Dogs” is set for noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at Riddell National Bank on U.S. 40/Indiana 46 next to Sonic.

“We have a lot of good auction and raffle items, and there will be K-9 demonstrations and a photographer to take pictures of people with the dogs and their handlers,” said Robin Heng of hosting organization SPPRAK — Special People Performing Random Acts of Kindness.

The main focus of SPPRAK is to benefit the Terre Haute community by supporting groups that can use some extra funding.

Sgt. Todd Haller of the THPD K-9 unit said bite sleeves are among the equipment needed for the ongoing training of the dogs and their partners.

“Words can’t describe how much our community supports us. It’s invaluable, really,” Haller said. “The SPPRAK people are very generous.”

The officers in the K-9 unit enjoy interacting with the public during demonstrations, he said, and the Terre Haute community has been very supportive of the unit since last year’s death of Officer Brent Long. That support has helped the unit members.

Along with the demonstrations, the family friendly event will include face painting and activities for children, along with food provided by Sonic.

Anyone wanting more information about this event, or SPPRAK, can send an email to spprak@yahoo.com, or check out the group’s page on Facebook.
