TREES to donate 28 trees for Fairbanks Park

TERRE HAUTE — The view at Fairbanks Park should get a little greener this spring.

Joy Sacopulos met with the Terre Haute Parks and Recreation Department board of directors Friday afternoon to solidify plans for the donation of 28 trees to that facility this spring. TREES Inc. will celebrate its 23rd anniversary this year, and in conjunction with 2013 Year of the River, she said the group would like to help replace trees which have been lost in recent years.

“The idea is to replenish the trees,” she said, explaining volunteers are willing to plant, and maintain the new trees for up to three years.

The donated trees will be about 12 feet tall, and include a variety of native hardwood species including beech and various oaks, she said.

The board unanimously voted to approve acceptance of the gift.

In other business, superintendent Eddie Bird sought approval for a resolution establishing a bid process for the department. The proposal fell into line with state guidelines which dictate all bids in excess of $150,000 must be received through a sealed, advertised process. Bids under the $150,000 cap can be solicited over the phone or through fax, while expenses under $10,000 can be handled at the department level. The board approved the measure unanimously.

Bird also informed the board that recent testing of swimming pools in Vincennes yielded troubling data. As a precaution, Terre Haute will take core samples from its own facilities.

“So we’re doing that Monday to test all of our pools,” he said.

In other business, the board accepted a bid of $30,473 from Kenney Corp. in Indianapolis for the installation of irrigation control panels. The equipment controls the sprinklers at the city golf courses. Two other bids were received for $31,996 and $33,786.
