Officials recommend rezoning for Dollar General

TERRE HAUTE — The Vigo County Area Plan Commission gave a favorable recommendation Wednesday to rezoning for a proposed Dollar General store for the corner of 25th and Hulman streets.

The new store, measuring 9,100 square feet, also received a favorable recommendation from the Area Planning Department professional staff. However, the staff recommendation included the condition that the store developer submit a parking lot landscaping plan with fencing and “vegetative plantings.”

In May, the Vigo County Commissioners allowed for rezoning of property at Indiana 63 and Springhill Drive for another Dollar General store. In that case, the Area Plan Department also gave a favorable recommendation but the Area Plan Commission had failed to reach an agreement and sent the rezoning request to the county commissioners without a recommendation.

The new store, being built by Foster Builders of Sullivan, will be on the southeast corner of 25th and Hulman streets, formerly the site of Rainbow Art and Frame and, before that, Indian Acres Food Market.

n The Area Plan Commission also heard discussion Wednesday night of a possible renaming of South 14th Street where it blends with South 13th Street and Canal Road.

The multiple names for a single stretch of roadway causes confusion, said Andy Stadler, a business owner in the area. The commission will conduct a hearing next month on the possible renaming, said Jeremy Weir, director of the Area Planning Department.
