Police identify victims in Friday’s fatal I-70 crash

CLOVERDALE — Two fatalities were confirmed Friday evening after a multiple-vehicle accident occurred on Interstate 70.

Sgt. Joe Watts said a woman and her 3-year-old daughter died as a result of injuries sustained, with the husband transported to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis along with other crash victims.

The accident occurred about 6:10 p.m. at the 43-mile marker of Interstate 70 in Putnam County just east of the U.S. 231 exit. The accident occurred in the eastbound lane, and according to Watts, investigators believe a driver’s failure to reduce speed led to the incident.

According to a news release issued by the ISP, a semitrailer driven by Jordan Moore, age and hometown still unreleased, failed to stop as traffic slowed. That semi reportedly struck the rear of a pickup truck driven by William Bertelmann, age and hometown still unreleased. The semi reportedly pushed the pickup into a wooded area south of the roadway. The semi continued on after that though, striking a passenger car in the rear and causing it to burst into flames.

That car was driven by Michael Bronson, 47, with occupants Emma Bronson, 49, and their daughter Zacchia, 3, all of Pascagoula, Miss.

Passersby reportedly stopped and attempted to help individuals out of the burning car. Emma and Zacchia died of chest and head injuries, according to the release. Michael Bronson was transported to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for neck and back pain. By Saturday afternoon he was reportedly released. Moore and Bertelmann remained in the hospital under observation Saturday. A condition update was not available.
