38 minors among 58 arrested by Excise police

TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State Excise Police officers arrested 58 people on 59 charges in Terre Haute over the weekend, the agency said in a press release.

Excise officers arrested 38 minors for illegal possession or consumption of alcohol. Fifteen adults were arrested for furnishing alcohol to a minor.

Officers also arrested or cited six people for a variety of other charges, including false informing and juvenile possession of tobacco.

Six Indiana State University students were arrested for illegal consumption after, police said, they ran in front of cars at Third and Chestnut streets, causing traffic to come to a halt.

A 17-year-old girl who was in Terre Haute visiting her sister also was arrested on suspicion of illegal consumption.

Excise officers also assisted Terre Haute Police Department officers with a loud party complaint in the 600 block of South Fifth Street. Excise officers arrested five people on charges of illegal consumption of alcohol. One underage male was jailed on charges of false informing and illegal consumption of alcohol.

Indiana State Excise Police officers were in Terre Haute as part of the Intensified College Enforcement, or ICE, initiative. The new program aims to reduce underage access to and use of alcohol at six college campuses: Ball State, Butler, Indiana, Indiana State, Notre Dame and Purdue.

As the enforcement division of the Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission, the primary mission of the Indiana State Excise Police is to promote public safety by enforcing Indiana’s alcoholic beverage code.

While excise officers have the authority to enforce any state law, they focus primarily on alcohol, tobacco and related laws.
