Clabber Girl to celebrate 120 years

Guided building tours start at 10 a.m.

TERRE HAUTE — A commercial mainstay celebrates its past today at the corner of Ninth Street and Wabash Avenue.

The Clabber Girl Corp. will host the 120th birthday of its building there today, offering guided tours as well as numerous giveaways and specials.

The building’s grand opening was first celebrated Sept. 28, 1892, as it served as an expansion of Hulman & Co.’s wholesale food business, begun about 40 years prior.

Clabber Girl spokeswoman Teresa Shaffer said the building remains a continual evolution, noting the company began renovations there in the early 2000s. The Clabber Girl Bake Shop opened in 2002,  culinary classes in the experimental kitchen in 2004, and Rex Coffee was introduced in 2008.

“We’ve been around for 162 years, the business has,” she said, adding the company’s rich history will be on display today.

Guided tours of the building will be conducted beginning at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. All guests will receive a commemorative Grand Opening Post Card. A free collector tin will be given away with every purchase at the bake shop, which will offer a number of specials.

Shaffer said the public is welcome to the event, whether it’s their first time visiting or a chance to return. More information is available at www.clabbergirl.com.
