TERRE HAUTE —

Court date set for attempted robbery

A March 5 trial date has been set for a woman arrested on suspicion that she was involved in an unsuccessful plan to rob a Terre Haute store.

Cassandra Martin, 22, appeared in Vigo Superior Court 3 on Thursday where a pretrial hearing was set for Feb. 11.

She was arrested Sept. 14 along with Michael Blasdel, 22, of Terre Haute, and Lucas Connor, 22, of Greensburg, after the trio, police believe, attempted to rob a discount store in the Southland Shopping Center.

They were formally charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery and attempted armed robbery, both class-B felonies.

Terre Haute Police report that the store manager was cashing out for the night when she saw two subjects wearing face masks standing near the front door. She called police, and when uniformed officers arrived, they found Connor and Blasdel near the store, and Martin waiting in a car parked at a nearby motel.

When the two men were apprehended, each possessed a loaded handgun and a face mask, police said.

One court date set in Vigo battery

A trial date of March 5 has been set for a man charged with battery causing serious injury after a Sept. 14 fight on Chaffee Road in southwestern Vigo County.

Meanwhile, another man believed to have been involved in the fight will return to Vigo Superior Court 3 to have court dates set.

Robert J. Ellinger, 25, of Terre Haute, appeared in court Thursday where Judge David Bolk also set a pretrial conference or Feb. 11.

Andrew N. Keller, 25, of Shelburn, requested a public defender during his hearing on Thursday.

Both men were arrested after the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene of a fight at about 11:44 p.m. Witnesses reported that Keller and two other men were inside a pickup truck, trying to leave the area, when Ellinger and others allegedly began striking the windshield and passenger window of the truck with golf clubs. Police report that Keller exited the truck to stop the damage, when he was hit with the golf clubs, sustaining cuts to his face, thumb and arms.

Keller allegedly pulled out a folding knife and stabbed Ellinger and another man. Ellinger reportedly had puncture wounds to his upper left abdomen and his right wrist. Both men were taken to Terre Haute Regional Hospital for treatment.

Police report that Keller’s injuries required 11 stitches, and Ellinger received 39 stitches.

Terre Haute man charged with sexual battery

A Terre Haute man has been charged with sexual battery after an August incident at a northside restaurant.

Tim Popoff, 47, appeared Thursday in Vigo Superior Court 3 where he learned that the class-D felony charge could be lowered to a misdemeanor.

Judge David Bolk continued the case to Monday to allow Popoff the opportunity to hire an attorney.

According to a report by Terre Haute Police, Popoff allegedly poked a 17-year-old co-worker in the breast on one occasion, and allegedly grabbed her buttocks the next day.

Popoff remains in the Vigo County Jail with bail set at $15,000 with no 10 percent allowed.

Trial date set in Sept. 8 stabbing

A Feb. 25 trial date has been set for a Terre Haute man arrested for aggravated battery in connection with a stabbing on Sept. 8.

Charles “Butch” Corn, 45, appeared via video in Vigo Superior Court 1 on Wednesday where Judge John Roach also set a hearing date of Dec. 17 in the case.

Corn is being held in the Vigo County Jail with bail set at $75,000 cash only.

Witnesses told investigators from the Terre Haute Police Department that the victim had been inside a vehicle with other men when Corn, who was standing outside the driver’s window of the vehicle, resumed an argument with the victim from earlier in the day. The victim got out of the vehicle and walked to the front where witnesses report that Corn stabbed him in the abdomen.

The victim was released from the hospital on Tuesday.
