Coach, ex-coach accused of relationship with student

BLOOMINGTON — A prosecutor has filed three counts of felony child seduction each against a current Martinsville High School coach and a former coach for alleged sexual relationships with the same 17-year-old female student.

Special Prosecutor Doug Cummins announced the charges, all class-D felonies, against suspended tennis coach Jeff McGOWN and former basketball coach Tim Wolf at the Indiana State Police post in Bloomington on Wednesday. WTHR-TV and WRTV-TV report the age of consent in Indiana is 16, but Cummins brought the charges because both men were in positions of authority.

Both men turned themselves in at the Morgan County jail on Wednesday, said Curt Durnil of the Indiana State Police in Bloomington. They both later bonded out, he said, adding that bond for each was $5,000 property and $1,000 cash.

Wolf resigned after Indianapolis police arrested him in February for alleged public indecency while the girl was present. An Indiana State Police investigation into that incident led eventually to McGOWN being drawn into the case, Durnil said.

“Once the investigation started and detectives started questioning folks inside the investigation, [McGown’s] name was brought in and he was questioned and charges stemmed from that,” Durnil said.

In addition to coaching in the Martinsville School District, both men are also teachers in the school district, Durnil said.

A message seeking comment was left at Wolf’s home. A published home telephone number for McGOWN could not be located.

The school is investigating internally.

The Indiana State Police criminal investigation division and special prosecutor Cummins conducted the investigation, Durnil said. The Martinsville school administration was “very cooperative” in the matter, he said.
