3 rescued from burning residence

Volunteer firefighter, deputy first to respond to blaze

NEWPORT — Quick action on the part of some first-responders is credited with saving the lives of three people in a Vermillion County fire early Saturday morning, according to the Vermillion County Sheriff’s Department.

Dan L. Ellis, the Newport volunteer fire department assistant fire chief, was returning home from work about 4 a.m. when he noticed a bright glow coming from the rear of a residence in the 500 block of East Market Street in Newport.

Upon investigating, Ellis found the rear of the residence to be fully engulfed. He called Vermillion County emergency dispatch and then went directly to the firehouse in Newport to return with fighting apparatus.

Mike Holtkamp, a Vermillion County sheriff’s deputy who was patrolling nearby, responded to the scene and immediately entered the burning house to warn residents.

Three occupants, Teresa J. Rogers, 30, Gordon R. Ashton, 34, and Ernie E. Green, 35, had all been sleeping with their bedroom doors closed when they were awakened by Holtkamp, who helped them escape the burning structure, according to a sheriff’s department news release.

The residents credit Holtkamp and Ellis with saving their lives, according to the news release.
