Borders did not introduce Sharia bill

Similar bill introduced by other representative

TERRE HAUTE — State Rep. Bruce Borders, R-Jasonville, did not introduce legislation that would deny recognition of the Islamic legal system, Sharia, in Indiana.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations says such proposals are “fear-mongering” attacks on Islam and are redundant because current law ensures the supremacy of federal and state laws.

Prior to the start of the Indiana General Assembly, Borders had told the Tribune-Star that he was considering filing a bill that deals with foreign laws.

However, Bazorders said he did not file a bill by the Dec. 15 deadline since another House member, Rep. Cindy Noe, R-Indianapolis, introduced HB 1078, which prohibits the enforcement of foreign law if the enforcement would violate a right granted by the Indiana Constitution or the U.S. Constitution.

Borders said the concept was part of a “wish list” of ideas for legislation he had considered before the start of the General Assembly.

“The concept of this particular bill would be that no Hoosier citizen would be made subject to any laws outside of our nation’s Constitution or our state’s Constitution,” he said.

Borders said he brought up Sharia law in an interview with the Tribune-Star in response to a question for examples of what could be included in the possible legislation.

“At the time of the interview, the bill had not been written, only the concept existed,” he said. “December 15th was the filing deadline for requesting drafts for new bills. When another legislator within the House or Senate has already requested a subject matter you have an interest in, it’s a matter of courtesy, and a matter of using Statehouse staff wisely, to work out a compromise with that legislator,” Borders said.

“As someone who has been actively involved in my own church and my Christian faith since I was a child, I have no desire in any way to remove the religious freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment to the Constitution … regardless of one’s particular faith,” he said.
