TERRE HAUTE —
A Kansas couple were in the Putnam County jail Tuesday after Indiana State Police troopers found them arguing on the shoulder of Interstate 70 near the Indiana 243/Lieber State Recreation Area exit.
Troopers arrested Dennis Wheaton, 21, of Junction City, Kan., and Kayla Browning, 20, of Kechi, Kan., about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.
When they approached the couple, who were standing near a yellow Dodge pickup truck, troopers found the pair “smelled strongly of alcohol” and appeared intoxicated, according to an ISP news release.
Further investigation revealed Browning had minor injuries to the side of her face and head.
Troopers determined Browning had been allegedly battered by Wheaton at a Cloverdale motel where a room sustained damages estimated at $250.
The couple is engaged to be married, according to the news release.
Wheaton is facing an allegation of battery, a class-A misdemeanor, one count of criminal mischief, a class-A misdemeanor, public intoxication and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, both also misdemeanors.
Browning is facing misdemeanor allegations of driving while intoxicated, public intoxication and consuming alcohol as a minor. Her injuries did not require medical treatment at the scene, police stated.
