Commissioners OK new courthouse memorial idea

Emergency services memorial will be where Vietnam one once stood

TERRE HAUTE — Vigo County Commissioners on Tuesday gave their approval for some first responders to proceed with an effort to establish a memorial on the south side of the county courthouse.

Terre Haute Firefighter Larry Akers and Vigo County Sheriff Greg Ewing sought permission to work on support and funding to establish an emergency services memorial where a Vietnam memorial had stood until it was moved earlier this year to the east side of the courthouse onto a veterans memorial plaza.

“We wanted to secure the land for an emergency services memorial,” Akers told commissioners, which would include city and county police as well as officers at West Terre Haute, Terre Haute International Airport and Indiana State University along with city and county firefighters and emergency management agency workers.

Commissioners want to review a rendering of any proposed memorial for the site.

“It would be something that would be consistent with what is around there,” Ewing told commissioners. “We have fifth-graders that visit the [jail] facilities and take tours around the memorials. There has been discussion of putting that [emergency services] memorial in other places and off the beaten path, so Larry and I have been brainstorming that since that the Vietnam memorial got moved, it leaves a nice place where there is a already a nice foundation, so to speak,” Ewing said.

Ewing said funding will be an important factor in the project, “but first we wanted to see if we had a viable location before we proceeded.”

n In other business, commissioners approved an all-way stop at the intersection of Roberts Road, Robertson Street and Davis Avenue. The county will add “stop ahead” signage on the roads in addition to two new stop signs to inform drivers of the upcoming all-stop intersection. The county’s engineer recommended the all-stop intersection as a traffic safety measure.

Commissioners also approved the county’s entering a contract with the Indiana Bond Bank to aid the county in hedging against higher gasoline and diesel fuel costs in 2013. Last year, the county received $5,000 from the bond bank when prices were higher, and it paid $2,300 back to the bond bank when prices were lower than hedge amounts.

“Though it is a small amount of savings, anything we can save is good. I think of it as an insurance policy,” said Commissioner Judith Anderson. The Vigo County Council must give final approval for the measure as it involves county funds.
