Project to result in 75-day road closure on Indiana 42

TERRE HAUTE — If you’re used to driving on Indiana 42 just east of Terre Haute, be prepared to look for some alternate routes this summer.

A major road improvement project, beginning on Indiana 42 near the Terre Haute International Airport, is expected to result in a 75-day road closure on the state highway starting around May 1, said Debbie Calder, communications director for the Indiana Department of Transportation, Crawfordsville District.

Indiana 42 is essentially an eastern extension of Poplar Street — beginning at Indiana 46/U.S. 40.

Gradex Inc., a Carmel-based contractor, won the bid for the $6.9-million project and already has crews at the site conducting tree removal and utility relocation.

The project includes adding new traffic lanes to Indiana 42 and improving the intersections at Hunt Road and Chamberlain Road, Calder told the Tribune-Star on Wednesday. The project will also improve the entrance to the airport, she noted.

The roadwork will take place on a roughly two-mile stretch from Indiana 46/U.S. 40 to Chamberlain Road and is expected to wrap up by July of next year, Calder stated.
