Brazil Coffee Grounds under new ownership

Former owner declines to comment on future of Terre Haute business

Brazil — Familiar faces greet old customers at the Brazil Coffee Grounds, despite an ownership change last month.

Christine Enders confirmed she and her husband, Larry, purchased the coffee shop at 533 E. National Ave. effective April 1, after their daughter-in-law, Trina Enders, who was working there at the time, told them it was for sale by owner Pete Wilson.

“And that got us thinking,” professional baker Christine Enders said Friday afternoon. “Because I’ve always wanted to do this anyway.”

Wilson said he’ll continue to own and operate Smoke N Peace at 421 Wabash Ave. in Terre Haute, but declined to comment on the status of the Coffee Grounds next door.

“I hope they do well and I’m sure they will,” he said of the Enders.

Enders said she’d been considering a return to baking by way of a part-time job when she learned of the opportunity. Her husband formerly served as plant manager at Metal Industries in Brazil. Before moving to Brazil in 1984, she worked in the bakery of a large grocery store. After the move, she managed the deli bakery of Terre Haute’s Lowell’s for a number of years, she said.

Her daughter-in-law’s background is more in line with soups and sandwiches, she said, explaining the match of talents.

Meanwhile, hot coffee and specialty drinks, including smoothies, lattes and sodas, are a favorite of long-time customers.

“We have a really good business,” she said, remarking at the number of people waiting each morning when they open. “We have a lot of loyal customers who come here every day.”

The store also delivers, and opens weekdays between 5:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday hours are 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sunday hours of 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“We decided when we started that we were going to keep everything they had in place, but we were going to add some things,” she said of the menu. “We have something for everyone.”
