Bid United auction under way, runs through Sunday

TERRE HAUTE — Bid United, an online auction benefiting the United Way of the Wabash Valley, is under way.

Items up for auction range from restaurant gift cards, a Nook Simple Touch Reader and laser treatments to more unique items such as outdoor billboard advertising space, hot-air balloon rides or 20 tons of road-packed limestone, which can be used for a driveway.

“It is a great way to get some early Christmas shopping done at reduced prices,” said Troy Fears, executive director of the United Way.

The eight-day online auction, which started Sunday, is at www.bidunited.org.

“It works just like eBay,” said Fears. A bid is submitted and if it is the highest bid at the end of the auction, that bidder is the winner.

Last year the auction raised $10,000. All of the proceeds go toward the United Way’s goal of $1.86 million this year. “It is a unique and different way to raise funding for the United Way,” Fears said.

There are 84 items in this year’s auction, the fourth year for the auction, Fears said.

“The items have been donated from local merchants or agencies. We also have a lot of sport memorabilia, such as an Austin Collie-signed [Indianapolis] Colts football and a Steve Weatherford-signed football,” Fears said.

Other items include autographed cleats, donated by New York Giants punter Weatherford, signed by Justin Tuck and Jason Pierre-Paul, both linebackers with the Giants. There are also tickets to see the Indiana Pacers and the Indiana Ice hockey team. There is also a Chicago Cubs Darwin Barney-autographed photo.

The auction ends at 8 p.m. Sunday.
