Hoosier Academies hosts info events

TERRE HAUTE — Susan Savant had several questions Wednesday for Rachael Borrelli, a community coordinator for Hoosier Academies, a state-accredited charter school that offers a fully online option.

Savant is looking at educational options for her children, and she liked what she heard about Hoosier Academies, which is state funded.

Borrelli was at the Vigo County Public Library as part of National School Choice Week. Hoosier Academies, which has about 5,200 students, hosted informational events across the state.

It offers three programs: Hoosier Academies Indianapolis; Hoosier Academies Muncie and Hoosier Academies Virtual School.

With the virtual school, students work from home online, but they have teachers and must meet the state’s academic standards, Borrelli said. They also take ISTEP and high school end-of-course assessments.

Students can log on and receive live instruction from a teacher, but the lesson is also recorded in the event a student misses it. Administrative offices are in Indianapolis.

“I love that we’re offering families another opportunity,” Borrelli said. “Traditional brick and mortar public schools don’t work for every student.”

Students enroll in Hoosier Academies for different reasons, she said. Some may be home-schooled, and parents “want more structure and accountability and want students to receive a regular high school diploma.”

In some cases, parents may have jobs that require a lot of travel, and their children go with them. Hoosier Academies, which is tuition-free, provides that flexibility. Students receive a free computer and free books.

There are social events each month, some in the home community and others in Indianapolis. Social events in Terre Haute have included skating, bowling and library days.

About 60 families from the Terre Haute area have children in Hoosier Academies, Borrelli said.

James Goodge, who also stopped by the library to receive information, said he was impressed with what he heard. “It’s really structured so it seems like it could be a good fit,” he said.
