Trial now set for May in neglect case against Russell

TERRE HAUTE — The jury trial date has changed for a Terre Haute man arrested for child neglect for allegedly tying up and confining his adopted children in the family home.

Larry D. Russell, 39, appeared via video for a hearing in Vigo Superior Court 1 on Friday, where Judge John Roach also heard a bond reduction request.

Roach set a new trial date of May 20 for Russell, noting that a previous trial date in April had been set when the case was being heard in a different court. The May 20 date fits into the Division 1 court calendar.

Public defender Matthew Daley also asked the judge to consider reducing Russell’s bail amount from $100,000, cash only, to a bond of $50,000 so that Russell can work as a trusty in the jail. The judge took that request under advisement and set a March 15 hearing date in the case.

Russell and his wife, Nikki, were arrested Nov. 23 after police investigated statements made by a 17-year-old boy, who said he escaped his adoptive parents’ home on North 12th Street by breaking out a second-floor window. The teen told police that he and his siblings were tied to beds using rope and duct tape, that they were deprived of food, and that they had been beaten.

Both Larry and Nikki Russell face six counts of child neglect and five counts of criminal confinement. Nikki Russell also faces two counts of battery by bodily waste and one count of battery resulting in bodily injury for a total of 14 criminal charges.
