Police nab naked car driver

Chase through city ends in high school parking lot

TERRE HAUTE — Police jailed a naked man Thursday afternoon after he led them on a north-south chase through Terre Haute after he is alleged to have exposed himself.

Terre Haute City Police identified the driver as James August Hartmann, 58, who was arrested on initial allegations of public indecency, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, criminal recklessness, leaving the scene of a property damage accident and two counts of resisting law enforcement.

Police said the incident began near North 11th Street when a delivery driver reportedly witnessed Hartmann exposing himself from his car there, according to Sgt. Scott Sevigny. Hartmann was nude inside his vehicle, Sevigny said, and is accused of fondling himself in view of officers as they approached after receiving the call.

Hartmann is accused of then driving off, heading south and leading police all the way down South Seventh Street, where he drove into the Terre Haute South Vigo High School parking lot and crashed into a police car.

Temperatures were in the middle 20s throughout the day, and police covered Hartmann’s nude body with a blanket while processing him for transport to Union Hospital, before he was taken to the Vigo County Jail.

Hartmann’s blood alcohol content tested at 0.24, and cocaine also was believed to be present, police said.

According to the jail automated inmate system, he was held Thursday night without bail and is scheduled to appear in Vigo County Superior Court Division 5 at 11 a.m. today.
