Veterans Expo slated for Tuesday

TERRE HAUTE — Veterans seeking employment in  a troubled job market may find the help they need at a Veterans Expo from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday at VFW Post 972 in Terre Haute.

Job seekers should bring a state-issued photo ID, certificate of release or discharge, and Social Security card to the employment fair, where they can also learn about education services, supportive services and veterans resources.

“Employers will there,” said disabled veteran Ron Whistler, who helped organize the event. “And this expo is not just for veterans. Their families and friends are invited as well, along with the public.”

Whistler knows what he is talking about, because since he attended the first expo last year, he has received employment assistance and is finishing a college degree through Indiana Wesleyan University. Whistler is now a district manager for Vector Marketing.

As an veteran who served in Iraq, he knows the challenges that other veterans go through finding work after a deployment. Whistler said he joined the U.S. Marines in 1993 and is now in the Army National Guard, for a total of 19 years of service to his country. He has been deployed to the Middle East twice, and twice to Camp Atterbury.

“Even for those vets who didn’t go overseas, their families still take the hit of the distance between them,” Whistler said of those who are deployed stateside. “It’s hard to get back into the swing of things. Hopefully, we can help them. Our big focus is on veterans, but we won’t turn away friends and family as well.”

The Brazil native said the expo has no admission, but he encourages people to participate in the silent auction fundraiser, which includes several donated items such as gift certificates, fireworks, weaponry and accessories.

Proceeds from the silent auction will go to the Wounded Warrior Project and to assist homeless veterans.

VFW Post 972 is at 1111 Veterans Square, which is about two blocks north of Wabash Avenue along 12th Street.
