Officials urge caution with fireworks

TERRE HAUTE — A ban on setting off personal fireworks appears to be unlikely for Terre Haute or Vigo County, despite the possibility of fires caused by rockets bursting in air.

“Everyone needs to be aware that the conditions are extremely dry,” Sheriff Greg Ewing said Monday, just two days before the nation celebrates another Independence Day. “People just need to use common sense, and we ask people to refrain from setting off fireworks.”

Terre Haute City Attorney Chou-il Lee agrees that in these days of historic drought, the possibility of sparks igniting dry tender or structures is a definite concern.

“A ban on personal fireworks would be unenforceable,” Lee said, explaining why the city has not followed a similar ban taken by Indianapolis. “We would be innundated by phone calls,” he said of the county dispatch center receiving citizen complaints.

Ewing agreed.

“We don’t want our 911 system flooded with calls about people setting off fireworks,” the sheriff said. But people should still report dangerous actions, he said.

City and county officials said Monday that they hope the public will follow the example of city officials, who have postponed Wednesday’s fireworks celebration, traditionally conducted in Fairbanks Park. Several other organizations around the county also have delayed their fireworks events.

Vigo County Commissioner Mike Ciolli noted that the county’s volunteer fire chiefs met Saturday to discuss the fireworks issue, and to urge the public out in the county to delay shooting off fireworks until a substantial rain has alleviated the dry conditions.
