3 killed in house fire in central Indiana town

ROACHDALE — The bodies of three members of the same Putnam County family were discovered at the scene of an early-morning house fire in the small community of Roachdale on Sunday.

Roachdale Police Chief Mike Mahoy told the Tribune-Star on Sunday evening the bodies of Robert Wiggins, Susan Wiggins and Charlene Wiggins were found at the scene of the blaze.

The exact ages of the victims were unknown Sunday night, but Mahoy said he believed Charlene Wiggins to be in her 80s, Susan Wiggins in her 50s and Robert “Bobby” Wiggins to be in his 40s.

Charlene Wiggins was mother to Susan and Robert, the chief said.

A cause of the fire had yet to be determined, but foul play was not initially suspected, according to a news release issued Sunday from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department.

The fire, which was reported about 6 a.m. Sunday, was in the 300 block of Railroad Street in Roachdale, a small town about 20 miles north of Greencastle near the Putnam-Montgomery county line.

According to Indianapolis television news video from the scene, yellow caution tape surrounded all that was left of the nearly completely destroyed home on Sunday.

Fire departments from Roachdale, Bainbridge and Russellville responded to the blaze as did the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department, the Putnam County Coroner’s Office, the Indiana State Fire Marshal and the Roachdale Police. Operation Life and PMH Medical Services also responded, according to the sheriff’s department news release.
