Applications available for YOUnity Village

TERRE HAUTE — Mental Health America of Vigo County Inc. has begun taking applications for the YOUnity Village Apartments — a $5.8 million project that will provide supportive housing to individuals who are homeless and are also disabled.

The nearly 30,000-square-foot YOUnity Village will provide 30 one-bedroom apartments.

The project was funded through tax credits, a “Shelter Plus Care” rental subsidy grant from the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development, and funds through the Indiana Housing Community Development Authority.

“The impact of this grant will be significant to our supportive housing program,” said Myra Wilkey, executive director of Mental Health America of Vigo County. “Six years ago, our agency recognized a need for services for individuals who sometimes shuttle between the street, homeless shelters, treatment facilities, jail and emergency rooms.”

Supportive housing is a combination of housing and services intended as a cost-effective way to help people live more stable, productive lives. Supportive housing is widely believed to work well for those who face the most complex challenges — individuals confronted with homelessness and who also have very low incomes and/or serious, persistent issues that may include addiction, mental illness or HIV/AIDS.

Mental Health America says studies have shown that leaving vulnerable individuals and families homeless costs a surprising amount of public dollars. Also, that providing these same people with supportive housing saves enough money to pay for their housing at the very least. Supportive housing helped save taxpayers millions of dollars, according to several studies conducted in the United States.
