Unchallenged Lockhart locks up board spot

TERRE HAUTE — Three incumbent Vigo County School Board members won’t have much competition in the Nov. 6 general election.

Just one other person filed, Larry Faulkner, for District 1.

The filing period closed at noon Friday.

Three seats are up for election, two in District 1 (Harrison Township) and the District 3 seat (Otter Creek/Nevins townships).

Paul Lockhart, District 3 incumbent, was the only person to file in that district.

“I’m honored to have the opportunity to serve another term as a board member,” Lockhart said Monday. “I look forward to working with the board to address the needs of students and the community. We face a lot of challenges and need to work hard to meet those challenges.”

Lockhart said he will continue to be “very accessible to the public so I can receive input from the public and hear their concerns.”

Incumbents Mel Burks and Jackie Lower both filed for re-election in District 1. Faulkner is their only opponent in the fall election. Faulkner, who has previously run for school board, is known in Terre Haute for his street preaching.

Burks is seeking a fifth term, Lower a second elected term and Lockhart his sixth nonconsecutive term. Lockhart is school board president.

Burks is the chief executive officer of Hamilton Center, Lower is a retired educator and Lockhart is a retired educator who now sells real estate.

The school board has seven members.

School board members are elected at-large by voters throughout the county and are paid $2,000 a year.
