Weekend arrests surrounding diesel fest fall by half to 65

TERRE HAUTE — Sixty-five arrests attributed to weekend events at the Wabash Valley Fairgrounds stand in contrast to what was described as a record-breaking production.

In a media release issued Sunday morning, the Indiana State Police provided patrol results comparing the 2011 and 2012 Scheid Diesel Extravaganzas, showing arrest totals dropped from 129 to 65, while total traffic violations increased to 755 from 578 during the same period last year. Five females reportedly were cited for public nudity, according to a report issued by the Associated Press.

According to personnel at the Vigo County Jail, the census Sunday evening was 304.

However, Marci Bryant, spokeswoman for Scheid Diesel Service Co., said the event produced a “record number” of sponsorships and vendors, with 38 companies participating.

“We had a great turnout for our event,” she said, adding several local businesses participated this year, including WTWO-TV, which served as the primary media partner.

According to information provided by Scheid Diesel Service Co., the event is now in its 16th year. Originally the TDR Rally in 1997, the event has evolved into the Scheid Diesel Extravaganza, locating in Terre Haute in 2000.

This year’s event featured diesel truck pull qualifications, truck and tractor pulls, diesel drags and burnout contests.

Bryant said the event has drawn criticism in the past for the number of arrests associated with it, but pointed out that those incidents occur outside the venue.

Event staff and security work diligently to ensure a family-friendly atmosphere inside the gates., she said.

According to the ISP, extra patrols were dispatched this past weekend to ensure the safety of the public as well as those attending the event. Troopers used plain cars, high-performance Mustangs and marked patrol cars in the effort.
