13 area not-for-profits receive $12.5K donation

TERRE HAUTE — Wabash Valley not-for-profits got some much-needed financial support Wednesday from organized labor and private electrical contractors.

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 725 and members of the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) teamed up to donate $12,500 to 13 area not-for-profit agencies, including food banks, veterans groups and others.

“I think everybody’s in a time of year where they need it, they could use it,” said Todd Thacker, IBEW Local 725 business manager, who presented the checks to the agencies at the union’s joint apprenticeship training center at 950 Ohio St.

“A thousand dollars goes a long way,” said Kim Kimbler of the Terre Haute Women’s Club, one of the recipient organizations. The club, which hosts the annual “Evening of Art and Wine,” provides shoes and socks for needy children in Vigo County, she said. Wednesday’s donation will pay for approximately 200 shoes, she said.

The Light House Mission, which provides food and shelter for homeless individuals and families at its location at 1450 Wabash Ave., also received a $1,000 donation.

“This is going to be a tremendous asset for the Light House Mission,” said Paul Shaw, the mission’s chief operating officer. “With a $1,000 donation, we can feed a lot of people.”

The donations are part of a collaboration between the IBEW Local 725 and the union’s signatory electrical contractors in NECA, Thacker said.

Another donation was awarded to the Disabled American Veterans of America, which will use the funds to provide rides to out-of-town health care facilities to local veterans, said Arley Price, who accepted a check for the DAV.

“These funds will help us” provide that transportation, Price said, who was joined at the event by fellow veteran Max Hewitt. “We really appreciate it.”
