More help needed to meet demand for Tribune-Star Christmas Basket Fund

TERRE HAUTE — The Tribune-Star Christmas Basket Fund continues to receive generous donations and eager volunteers, but more remains to be done to ensure a bountiful Christmas for the area’s neediest residents.

Donations are arriving at the Tribune-Star and through the Wabash Valley Community Foundation to provide food baskets the morning of Christmas Eve to 600 families.

The call for volunteers has been answered and there are now enough signed up to ensure the baskets are assembled and delivered on time. However, cash donations are still needed for the effort, said Kim Wilkerson of the Tribune-Star and an organizer of the event with fellow Tribune-Star employee Michelle Poorman.

The baskets — which will include ham, vegetables, dinner rolls, milk and pumpkin pie — make a big difference for needy families in the area, Wilkerson said.

“There are a lot of families who don’t have anything.” The baskets ensure they can have a good meal, or several meals, she said.

This year, the Tribune-Star is partnering with the Wabash Valley Community Foundation in the fund drive. The foundation will mail each donor a receipt showing the amount of his or her donation. The donations are tax deductible.

To promote literacy, each basket also contains a book for each child in the household, Poorman said. This year, books are plentiful thanks in part to a donation of hundreds of books from BluSky Publishers LLC of Springhill Drive in Terre Haute.

Book donations can still be made at the Tribune-Star at 222 S. Seventh St.

Any questions about the annual drive can be directed to Poorman at 812)-31-4360 or Wilkerson at 812-231-4219 at the Tribune-Star.

The Salvation Army, Baesler’s Market, B&B Foods and Boo’s Crossroads Cafe are once again helping in the annual effort.

Basket fund donations can be mailed to the Tribune-Star Christmas Basket Fund, P.O. Box 149, 222 S. Seventh St., Terre Haute, IN 47807.
