Gov.-elect visits Terre Haute

Post-campaign tour brings Pence to Clabber Girl

TERRE HAUTE — Indiana governor-elect Mike Pence brought his post-election tour of Indiana to Terre Haute on Friday evening, landing at Hulman & Co.’s Clabber Girl facility and meeting with local business, education, government and not-for-profit leaders.

Upon entering the building at Ninth Street and Wabash Avenue, Pence said he formerly worked for a Hulman-owned broadcast company during his radio career.

“I feel like I’ve finally made it to the mother ship,” he joked. “Clabber Girl.”

After briefly touring Hulman & Co., sampling food in the Clabber Girl Bake Shop and chatting with people taking part in The Miracle on 7th Street event, Pence encouraged area civic leaders to make recommendations of people who would like to join his administration in Indianapolis.

“I want to be surrounded by men and women who know Indiana can be the best,” Pence said. “My goal is to reach out to the four corners of this state.”

Pence also took the opportunity to invite members of the Terre Haute community to his All-Indiana inaugural festivities Jan. 12 and 13 in Indianapolis.

“I’m really just here just to say thank you,” Pence said, adding he wants to build on the successes of Gov. Mitch Daniels.

“We’re the fiscal envy of the country,” Pence said. “Indiana can help lead this country by example.”

During a question-and-answer period, Pence also repeated his decision to refrain from setting up a state-based health care exchange under the new Affordable Care Act.

Such an exchange could cost the state up to $50 million with few clear benefits, he said.
