Grandparents facing drug charges

Allegedly caught with drugs in presence of toddler

WEST TERRE HAUTE — Two grandparents remained in custody Thursday stemming from allegations of drug use in the presence of a toddler.

Ronald Wayne Akers, 55, and Tammie Rae Akers, 49, both of West Terre Haute, were arrested at about 7:50 p.m. Wednesday when West Terre Haute police arrived at their home to serve a warrant to another member of the family.

According to an arrest report filed with the Vigo County Prosecutor’s Office, officers went to the mobile home in the 800 block of West Paris Avenue and detected the odor of burnt marijuana before knocking on the door.

After knocking on the front door and identifying themselves as police officers, they say Ronald Akers opened the door and was asked if his daughter was inside. He answered that she was not, and officers observed through the open door a woman later identified as Akers’ wife, sitting on the couch and a “small female child running around the trailer,” the report states.

Officers reported smelling more burnt marijuana inside and seeing a “large cloud of smoke in the front room of the trailer,” the report states.

A subsequent search reportedly revealed marijuana to be present on the kitchen counter, as well as rolling papers and scissors. Tammie Akers was later found to be in possession of a burnt marijuana cigarette in her front shirt pocket, according to the report.

The child was later identified as the couple’s 2-year-old granddaughter, over whom they reportedly had temporary custody. Two other female children, ages 3 and 5, were reportedly also in their custody, but were not present at the time. Child Protective Services was called to the scene, and the three children are reportedly in its custody now.

Evidence collected at the scene reportedly amounted to 15.1 grams of marijuana. Both Ronald and Tammie Akers were arrested on felony allegations of neglecting a dependent and possession of marijuana.

According to the Vigo County Prosecutor’s Office, the two remain in the Vigo County Jail with bail set at $10,000 cash for each. Their next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 11 in Vigo County Superior Court Division 1.
