Pair held in child molesting case

BRAZIL — Two Clay County men remain in custody facing allegations involving child molestation.

According to a news release issued by the Clay County Sheriff’s Department, Tommy K. Edmonson, 64, and his grandson, Jared Cooksey, 19, both of Turner, were arrested Friday as part of an ongoing investigation involving the alleged molestation of a Clay County youth.

The investigation reportedly began Nov. 21 when the sheriff’s department was notified by Child Protective Services of a possible molestation with related incidents spanning five years. According to the release, the victim accused Cooksey of beginning the relationship five years ago, with Edmonson becoming involved about a year ago.

According to the release, the sheriff’s department received a call Friday from a member of the alleged victim’s family stating that Cooksey and another juvenile male had driven into the area of their home and fired a handgun into the air. Det. Jerry Siddons, lead investigator in the case, observed Cooksey riding a motorcycle into the Turner area a few minutes after the report of shots fired.

Siddons reportedly attempted to intercept the motorcycle as it drove through Turner, but Cooksey and his passenger stopped in the driveway of a relative’s home there and ran into a fenced-in area. Additional officers were called to the scene and both were taken into custody. A handgun was reportedly found hidden in a nearby wood pile.

According to the release, Clay County juvenile authorities opted against detaining the minor in Cooksey’s company. However, both Cooksey and Edmonson were presented to Vigo County Superior Court Division 3 and ordered to be held in lieu of a $50,000 cash bail.

Edmonson faces a class-B felony allegation of child molestation and a class-C felony allegation of sexual misconduct with a minor.

Cooksey faces a class-B felony allegation of child molestation, a class-C felony allegation of sexual misconduct, a class-C felony allegation of criminal recklessness and a class-A misdemeanor of possession of a handgun without a license.
