Vigo library leaders close to picking new director

TERRE HAUTE — Leaders of the Vigo County Public Library are very close to selecting a new director.

A three-person search committee, made up of members of the library board of directors, has narrowed the search to replace outgoing director Nancy Dowell to three final candidates, said Hank Metzger, board president and chairman of the committee.

The search started with about 25 applicants, he said.

“We’ve narrowed it down to three very outstanding candidates,” Metzger told a Monday evening meeting of the library board.

The full, seven-person library board is scheduled to  meet on Nov. 30 to interview the final three candidates and select a new director, Metzger said. All three candidates are coming from out of town for interviews, he said.

There were no candidates for the director’s position from within the current library staff, Dowell said following the meeting.

Dowell announced her upcoming departure from the director’s position this summer after 13 years on the job. She will remain at the library’s helm until the new director is in place, she said. It was not clear when the new director would be in a position to begin, she said.

In September, the library board voted to hire a search firm, Bradbury Associates/Gossage Sager Associates of Kansas City, Mo., to assist in finding a new director. The cost of the search firm’s contract is $18,000 plus travel and advertising expenses. Board members on Monday night said they were pleased with the company’s help in the search process.

n Meanwhile, renovations inside the library continue with no clear end in sight.

The library is undergoing a massive renovation at a cost of about $200,000 that will include the installation of automated check-out equipment, new security gates, new floor covering and new scanning codes for all chargeable materials.

A delay in receiving some of the equipment slated for the library lobby has temporarily slowed the work, Dowell said.

The library board is made up of seven volunteers. Three members are appointed by the Vigo County School Board, two by the Vigo County Commissioners and two by the Vigo County Council.

The next public library board meeting will take place at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 17 in a meeting room of the main branch.
