United Way fundraiser delivers in an emergency

Calendar sales will benefit Valley charity

TERRE HAUTE — They may not be the “calendar girls” Neil Sedaka famously sang of 50 years ago, but the United Way of the Wabash Valley is hoping Vigo County first responders will make a big hit of their own.

At the Saratoga Restaurant on Tuesday night, the United Way unveiled its first-ever emergency responders calendar featuring 12 local police officers and firefighters.

“I can cross it off my bucket list,” joked Vigo County Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Trevarthan when asked if he ever expected to pose for a calendar photo. Trevarthan is “Mr. May” in the calendar, which will not be offered for sale until the United Way’s annual Power of the Purse event Oct. 24.

Only about 1,000 calendars will be printed and as many as 600 women are expected to attend the Power of the Purse, said Troy Fears, executive director of the United Way of the Wabash Valley.

“The girls in my office love a man in uniform, so I think they will sell very quickly,” Fears said.

The Power of the Purse, which started in 2004, is a United Way fundraiser that celebrates the economic power of women.

“I know [the women] will be thrilled when we roll out the calendar that day because our models will be in attendance selling them,” said Claudia Tanoos, who is leading the 2012 United Way campaign.

Only five sample calendars have been printed so far, Fears said.

The wall calendars, which will sell for $10, feature a different emergency responder each month. The Indiana State Police, the Terre Haute Police Department, the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department and the Terre Haute Fire Department all are represented.

“I guess if we had to be in [a calendar], this would be the best one, since it’s for charity,” said Officer Ryan Adamson of the THPD. Adamson is posing in his photo with his K-9 partner, Caron. “It’s our way to give back.”

Caron is not the only four-legged creature featured in the calendar. “Pluto,” a small Dalmatian, is pictured with THFD Battalion Chief Nick Sarris for the month of March.

This is the first year for this fundraiser, Fears noted. With sponsorships included, it could raise as much as $15,000, he said. The “presenting sponsor” is Terre Haute Savings Bank. Also helping on the project were Roxy Studio, MillerWhite and Woodburn Graphics, Fears said. Other local businesses also purchased monthly sponsorships, he said.

“It’s a new experience, that’s for sure,” said Trooper Michael Taylor of the Indiana State Police, who is featured in August. We’re happy to do it, honestly. I think it’s going for a good cause.”
