Downtown weapon incident prompts arrest

Man allegedly fires high-powered pellet gun at vehicle in McDonald’s drive-through

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute police arrested a man Wednesday afternoon after he allegedly fired a high-powered pellet gun at a passing vehicle in the McDonald’s parking lot at Third and Walnut streets.

According to police, the alleged victim called 911 shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday to report that while passing a vehicle in the drive-through lane at McDonald’s, a male passenger in a four-door Ford had reached out the window and fired a pellet gun in the victim’s direction. The incident prompted a major response from police units in the area.

Shortly after the 911 call, Indiana State University Police stopped a vehicle — that matched the description reported by the alleged victim — at the intersection of Wabash Avenue and Fifth Street with three occupants.

The alleged victim gave a description of the gunman that matched the passenger in the car stopped by police.

Lt. Edward Thompkins of the Terre Haute Police Department said a female passenger in the back seat of the car stated that the pellet gun belonged to her, and she had given it to the passenger.

A license check of the male driver revealed that he was driving while suspended. He was also cited for having an open alcoholic beverage container in the vehicle.

Both the male driver and female passenger were released from custody after questioning. The male passenger, whose name was not released by police, was arrested on preliminary charges of criminal recklessness and intimidation.

The car was towed after it was searched by police, who did find the pellet gun.

More than six police vehicles responded to the scene of the traffic stop, blocking eastbound traffic for almost an hour during the investigation.
