Woman faces charges of faking birth, death of child

A Cayuga woman returns to court Monday facing allegations involving a faked pregnancy.

According to information provided by the Vermillion County Circuit Court, Summer D. Tryon, 31, Cayuga, faces an allegation of deception, a class-A misdemeanor. The allegation involves Tryon’s reported claim that a child she had given birth to had died in March.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed in court, Tryon admitted to deputies that she had “faked” the pregnancy, birth and subsequent death of her fictitious daughter, Lilly Mae Bex, in an effort to make her ex-boyfriend, Michael Bex, “feel bad for hurting her emotionally.”

The case reportedly included pictures of a friend’s baby which she posted on Facebook, as well as ashes taken from a barbecue pit in Shades State Park, which served as the remains of the infant she told people was cremated in Montana, where she and her ex-husband, James Garretson, had moved.

Staff at the Deverter Funeral Home in Cayuga had been hired to perform a service for the infant but became suspicious after receiving calls telling them the whole thing was a hoax, the affidavit reports.

Tryon was arrested July 23 and released on bail July 26, according to personnel at the Vermillion County Jail.

She returns to Vermillion County Circuit Court at 9 a.m. Monday.
