Bemis to eliminate some administrative jobs

Some TH employees will be offered positions in Wisconsin

TERRE HAUTE — Bemis, the plastic packaging manufacturer, is eliminating some administrative jobs at its Terre Haute facility, a company official confirmed Thursday.

At least some of the employees affected are to be offered jobs in Oshkosh, Wis., a few miles from the company headquarters in Neenah, Wis., said Kristi Pavletich, a public relations specialist with Bemis.

The specific number of Terre Haute-based jobs that could be affected was not immediately known. However, 12 open administrative positions in Oshkosh will be offered to employees currently based in Terre Haute, Pavletich said.

“There may be more” open positions in the future, Pavletich told the Tribune-Star on Thursday. “It does not mean that everyone will lose their positions, but it is fair to say that there could be a redundancy in some positions. We just don’t know yet.”

Bemis employs about 787 people at its Fruitridge Avenue facility, one of the company’s biggest plants in North America. The unionized workforce at the Terre Haute plant was not expected to be affected by the change, Pavletich said.

“I would say the staffing and manufacturing operations will be minimally impacted by the change in the administrative office’s location,” she said.

Bemis makes plastic packaging for consumer products, such as bottled water, sports drinks and snack foods. The company’s sales dropped in the second half of 2011. However, analysts have recently upgraded Bemis’ stock ratings in light of better-than-expected first quarter figures.

Earlier this year, Bemis sought a five-year personal property tax abatement on an investment of about $10.6 million in new equipment for the Terre Haute plant. It also announced it expected to add 40 new jobs in Terre Haute, partly as a result of closing two smaller plants in New Jersey and Texas.

Those plans remain on track, Pavletich said.

“The business is going well,” she said. “We’ve done some optimizing of our resources by closing some of our plants in the U.S. and transferring some of that business to some of our larger plants,” including Terre Haute. “Our long-term plan is to continue to grow the business there. We’re just trying to internally move things around so we can have a more focused growth strategy.”
