TERRE HAUTE —
Officer Shadow, K-9 partner to Terre Haute Police Officer Brent Long, has made a full recovery from the gunshot wound he sustained almost a year ago, and is in the running for a national award.
The now-retired Belgian Malinois police dog has already been honored by the Indiana Veterinary Medical Association with the Hero Award, presented to honor animals in Indiana that have distinguished themselves through acts of courage or heroism.
He is currently among 16 law enforcement/arson dogs who is nominated for the 2012 American Hero Dog Awards, presented by the American Humane Association.
The public is encouraged to vote online for Shadow by visiting www.herodogawards.org and selecting Shadow. Voters are limited to one vote per day in each of eight categories. Voting ends June 30. Finalists in each category will compete for the grand prize of American Hero Dog in voting that runs from July 3 to Oct. 5.
