BOWLING GREEN —
A structural problem on the Eel River Bridge on Indiana 46 at Bowling Green in Clay County has prompted a weight restriction of 16 tons, placed by the Indiana Department of Transportation.
Typically, cars, minivans and pickup trucks are less than the 16-ton weight limit. Vehicles weighing more than 16 tons should seek alternate routes.
The through truss bridge, built in 1933, was closed for more than a month late last year after a bridge inspection found a structural problem in the gusset plates. The repairs were completed in December.
Additional repairs are now being done to address deteriorated gusset plates on the bridge, based upon a recent inspection of the bridge.
Signs displaying “Weight Limit 16 Tons” have been posted on both sides of the bridge and at the intersections of Indiana 59 and 46, at Indiana 246 and 46, and in Spencer at U.S. 231 and Indiana 46.
A repair contract is being developed, according to INDOT, and a timeline for construction will be released when finalized.
