Several injured in Rosedale standoff

ROSEDALE — This normally quiet, southern Parke County town was the scene of gunshots and an intense police standoff Sunday afternoon.

What started out as a battery complaint and a call for medical aid escalated when police arrived at a home on South Main Street. Two law enforcement officers were wounded in an exchange of gunfire with a suspect at the home and several blocks around the home were sealed off until police could secure the area, said Sgt. Joe Watts of the Indiana State Police.

According to an ISP press release, Zachary T. Buza, 19, of Rosedale, was in the Parke County Jail early today facing initial charges of felony attempted murder, criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon and battery.

Watts said authorities received two calls — one a medical emergency and the other a domestic battery complaint — about 4 p.m. Sunday. Both calls were regarding incidents at the South Main Street home.

A deputy town marshal and an Indiana State Police trooper responded and arrived at the home just as a man and a girl were fleeing the residence. They informed the officers that Buza was inside and was armed, police reported.

“As soon as the trooper began to exit his vehicle, shots rang out from the home,” Watts said. The trooper’s car was struck multiple times, causing broken glass and a flat tire. Both the deputy marshal and the trooper returned fire, Watts said.

The trooper and the deputy marshal both received injuries to their arms, but continued to work the scene, Watts said. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening and were possibly caused by shrapnel from the shots or broken glass, he said.

Watts said no additional shots were fired after the initial exchange of gunfire.

By about 6 p.m., an ISP SWAT team had surrounded the home, and a little more than an hour later, Buza surrendered without incident, Watts said. Buza was taken to Union Hospital in Terre Haute for treatment of lacerations and contusions, then transported to the Parke County Jail, police reported.

The man and the girl who fled the residence were taken to Union Hospital in Clinton for treatment. The girl, 17, was reportedly injured during the initial domestic disturbance.

The injured policemen were treated at the scene.
